Is your Inner Commentary Twisting your Hose?

A guest message from Dana Mrkich, February 11, 2013

positive self talkWe’ve all got some kind of running commentary in our heads, acting like the voiceover to our personal life movie. For some it runs from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep. For others, especially if you’ve done a certain amount of meditation or inner-work, the commentary has long periods of silence but still pipes up every now and again responding to some challenging situation. The commentary can range from the mundane, running through to do lists, to profound insights and ideas directed by our intuition or higher consciousness.

The type of commentary that is most common however, and the most debilitating, is negative self-talk. We may not even realise the way in which we speak to ourselves, but next time you suddenly feel your mood change, a wave of anger, depression, anxiety or some other emotion taking a hold of you, your body tense up or feel heavy, your solar plexus knot up, your neck tighten – try to remember what thoughts you were just having. Try to remember beyond the topic you were thinking about – let’s say it was worrying about money. What was your commentary saying exactly? “I never have enough”? “Life is always such a struggle?”

We hear these thoughts and believe that they are our truth, because they are reflecting how we think or feel about something in that moment. So we just let the commentary tape keep playing because we assume it’s just voicing what we’re thinking and feeling.

The problem with this is that our commentary tape is not only voicing what we’re thinking and feeling in that moment. The tape is also voicing thoughts and beliefs based on experiences that happened years ago, generations ago to our ancestors and even lifetimes ago! Further, our commentary tape is sending its message forward into our tomorrows! It’s as if it is sending the script for tomorrow’s scenes out ahead of us. We think we show up each morning with a blank page, ready to start fresh, but not so. We actually already have the energetic script set up for us, which we pre-wrote with our former thoughts/beliefs/wounds etc and our physical has to play out to match it. So our yesterday’s thoughts of ‘Life is always such a struggle’ set up situations for us in our today’s and tomorrow’s that are a physical match to that. The physical isn’t punishing us or judging us, it’s just responding in the exact same way the props guys and actors and wardrobe department respond to whatever directives have been put out by the screenwriters and film director.

The good thing about this knowledge is that we can change our energetic script anytime. We can replace the negative self-talk with positive self-talk – or even silence is a better alternative if positive self-talk is too big a stretch right now.

Imagining something you enjoy like the beach or a fun activity, is another better alternative. You can picture a big red stop sign and say stop in your mind anytime you catch yourself saying something negative about yourself, and if you go blank after that it’s okay.

There’s a lot of emphasis out there on positive self-talk, but it’s okay to have a bridge until you can get to the positive stuff. The bridge acts like a circuit breaker, disconnecting you in that moment from the negative stuff. In that moment of disconnection, you’re automatically shifted into your authentic flow space so positive self-talk is more of an optional extra choice anyway rather than mandatory.

vitalityThink of yourself as being part of a long hose connected up to Source Energy. When you go into negative self-talk, you’re twisting the hose making it really difficult for good stuff to flow through to you: wellbeing, happy feelings, abundance, opportunities. When you let go of the negative stuff, the hose untwists and goes back to it’s normal flow state. We don’t really have to do anything or say anything special to be in our optimal state – it’s more that we need to learn how to stop doing whatever it is that blocks us from our optimal state.

So it’s very empowering to find out: in which ways do you twist your hose? Do you get caught up in negative thoughts and self-talk? Did you know that just because you think something about yourself, it doesn’t mean it’s true! Just because you think “I’m such an idiot” or “I’m not good enough” doesn’t mean you have to believe it. It’s okay to say to the part of yourself that tells you regularly “I’m not good enough”: “I AM good enough.” It’s okay to say to the part of yourself that has as it’s daily mantra “We never have enough money”: “We are always taken care of.” If that feels like a lie, try another tactic. Come from a more proactive stance: “I now open to new ways of receiving, so that we always have enough. Thank you.”

Over this next week pay attention to your inner commentary. Pay attention to your moods and feelings and check into what kind of thoughts led up to those feelings. Our inner commentary tape has a lot of gifts and messages for us, but left unattended it can run amok and re-create situations and patterns in our life that have long passed their use by date. It’s up to us to check in with it regularly.

Fight or Flow?

flowResistance shows up in our body as dis-ease, headache, joint pain, tightness, anxiety, heartburn, constipation…there are countless examples. What’s happening in our body is always symbolic of what’s happening in our life. As above, so below; as within, so without.

If we are experiencing resistance in our bodies, minds, relationships or day-to-day living ~ asking ourselves whether we are fighting against the situation or flowing through it can begin to point to a solution. Here are a few tips in allowing life to flow through us:

1. Swimming Downstream
Quite simply if we are swimming upstream (trying too hard in an ineffective way), we are unable to access the ease and wellness naturally available to us. It’s similar to putting a cork in our flow of vitality, and life backing up. It’s here we feel the most pain and life’s a struggle. Being tough on ourselves and trying to control what we can’t doesn’t make us strong…but slowing down, accepting, honouring, embracing, and voicing who we are does.

When we let go of control, and importantly, our desire for control, we naturally experience more flow. We can’t be stuck if we are not controlling, and we can’t be swept over by the current if we are actively engaged in living. Flowing with the river allows us to effectively use our energy and receive all the gifts life has to offer.

TIP: If you were to imagine a current of energy in your body, is it heading in a natural direction? Does it feel stuck or clogged anywhere? Let go of struggle. Where can you allow your natural vitality to flow through? Allow your body’s innate intelligence to dictate the flow of your current and smooth out any rough patches. Feel yourself in complete and natural flow.

2. The Power of Grace
Dr. Wayne Dyer suggests there is huge difference between taking motivated action and inspired action in our lives. When we’re motivated, we ram through our ideas (fight); when we’re inspired, an idea gets a hold of our soul (flow). To lead from our soul, is to be in the state of grace.

Author Caroline Myss reminds us of this choice in our interactions. “We can see someone in grace, or choose not to. Grace someone or withhold grace from another.” It’s a lot of hard work to act from this place, yet when we do so, we are partnering with the Divine and more able to access our full potential, and help others in theirs. Challenges may or may not disappear, but our experience is always one of more ease, transformation, and even gratitude.

TIP: If in conflict with another, reflect on what someone acting from grace would do in the same situation. Set your intention to the highest and best outcome for all concerned, and trust it will come to be. Put your hand on your heart before an important conversation, or if the other is open to it, sit back to back (heart centre to heart centre)…and watch as your energy, thoughts and words shift towards something more loving.

3. Winds of Change
Life inevitably rocks us from time-to-time when a tornado of unwanted change sweeps through. Dyer tells us, “When we’re confronted with a life situation we can do nothing about, we’re challenged to change ourselves.” We can be victim or creator. Julia Cameron beautifully writes, “Our dreams may feel thwarted when in reality they are being tempered. We are being shaped to fit a divine purpose. We can cooperate or we can resist.” Perhaps life has just opened a door.

The same seems to apply when we find ourselves stuck at one of life’s crossroads. Caroline Myss says it bluntly, with love, “If you choose the familiar, you’ll fall on your face. Honour your pivotal moment of change. Dare to make the tough choice, then let go of the outcome.” Phew, not easily done, but how liberating to simply go where our soul beckons us, and trust there’s a Divine purpose in it…a gift in becoming more whole.

TIP: I love this affirmation from self-empowerment author Louise Hay: “Life shows me what to do next. Life loves me, and I am safe!”

Our True Self

Heart-centredness & Unity
know your true self and inner vitalityThe next stage of our journey is about witnessing even more of our true self and a sense of becoming more at home in our own skin. We are realizing too that the skin is not a barrier of who we are, as we become aware of our soul connection with all consciousness.

You may even be feeling your energy body expanding, as more of your love and light fills to the brim of your physical barrier, and sense even more consciously how far your energy radiates out from there at all times.

When there’s a conscious connection with our heart and the intention to radiate that energy outwards, we will experience even more unity with all that is within and surrounds us. It is an interesting sense of filling the inner and also extending into the outer. Notice how it is always a unity of these two things, and at the same time there is no duality!

Cosmic Consciousness
In times when there wasn’t the realization that the world was as big as it was, the reality of being globally united was true, as people didn’t sense themselves as separate from anyone else. They knew also that they were aligned with the stars, the Earth, and part of the universe. They knew that as much as they revered the stars and the universe, they also were sacred creatures.

As I write this message, I reflect on a journal entry I made one summer in which a native elder had come to me in a dream which exemplified this concept:

My beloved teacher came to me smiling like the sun…I noticed she WAS the sun setting on gentle waves on the beachy shore. She was also part of the air, the most gentle of breezes. Later she visited the Dog Star Sirius…and eventually became the rushing wind, signalling the rain showers which followed on my tent….

What a gift she gave in teaching the truth of our multidimensionality and connection with the elements.

Guided Visualization

You may wish to see yourself as a dove or riding the wings of a bird…a beautiful graceful bird that knows exactly where it needs to go, knows itself to be in the flow, and knows itself to be a creature that can flow through life. It is able to rise above Earthly concerns and it sees things from a view of perspective. It also can sweep down to the Earth when it is time for nourishment. It rides between the worlds, and that is what is required of us at this time ~ not to be up solely in the spiritual world, and not to be solely chained to 3D reality, but to recognize ALL of self.

Imagine standing tall, being rooted to the Earth and stretching hugely upwards into the skies. See yourself as that person standing both on the Earth and who has their head also in the Heavens, for that is YOU.
